My role as a therapist
The profession of therapy loves jargon. We offer space so that clients can move from a difficult place to a better place. We hold clients. We walk alongside them. It is tempting to use these words and phrases, partly because they capture a feeling and partly because explaining what is really going on is challenging. My role is best described as nurturing. I listen carefully, respond supportively, and apply psychological knowledge and awareness to my client’s lived experience. I forage for the resources my clients already have that can help them help themselves. I identify the possibilities and the potential for my clients to break out of situations and the beliefs that hold them back. I respond to the client as I experience them, offering a mirror for them to see themselves more accurately and compassionately. Together, we discuss, explore, acknowledge feelings, get curious, hypothesise, and break down mental barriers. And we celebrate being good enough human beings.
