What do you need?
People tend to seek therapy when they sense something is wrong with them. Something that leaves them unable to live fully and effectively in the world. The issue presented to the therapist is often a set of symptoms that have been grouped under a label, such as Anxiety or Depression. Sometimes the label will be referred to as a disorder or a mental health issue. Medication to suppress or control symptoms may have been offered. On this website, under the heading Your Issues, you will find many examples.
However, symptoms are only part of your story. It is often difficult to answer the question 'What is wrong?' It requires the kind of awareness and understanding that is missing at this point, and might be gained during therapy. As a therapist, I don't ask, 'What is wrong?' I am more likely to ask, 'What has happened to you?' Or, 'What feels challenging to you right now?' And, of course, 'What do you need?'
Often, we struggle to cope in difficult situations or don't make the best use of opportunities because we are ill-prepared. Because we didn't develop the confidence and resilience we need now during our childhood years. To quote Mark Brayne, 'it all depends on how we are cooked.' In therapy, this all gets unearthed and examined. It is much easier to make progress in whatever way you want in life once you understand how you got to where you are.
So, if you are wondering whether therapy might be for you, think about the outcomes on offer. I have condensed the feedback from many of my clients celebrating the end of therapy. They have been on a process of self-discovery. They understand their past experiences better, they believe in themselves more, and they feel more confident, peaceful, and ready to face the challenges to come. And who doesn't need that?
